How To Know An Investment Is A Scam (And What To Do If You’ve Been Scammed).

Every day in Nigeria, people lose money to fake investment platforms, fake crypto schemes, and “bring two people” Ponzi companies.

Some people don’t talk about it because they feel ashamed.

But the truth is smart people get scammed too, because fraudsters have become very clever.

Here’s how to protect yourself.

✅ 1. “Double Your Money” or “50% in 2 Weeks”

If someone promises you unrealistic returns like:

❌ 50% every month

❌ Double your money in 7 days

❌ Guaranteed profit

Run away.

No legitimate business gives that type of return.

✅ 2. They ask you to pay into a personal account

If the company is real, they will use a registered business account.

If they ask you to pay into:

A personal account

 A random name

An account that doesn’t match the company name

It is a scam.

✅ 3. They don’t have a physical office or real staff

Fraudsters hide behind WhatsApp/Telegram but cannot show:

❌ Real office

❌ Real registration

❌ Real identification

❌ Real customer reviews

Some will show pictures of an office on Google ,ask for a video call or visit.

✅ 4. They pressure you to “join now”

Scammers use urgency to block your thinking:

“Offer closes today”

 “Only 2 slots left”

“If you don’t invest now, you will miss out”

Legitimate businesses don’t force you.

✅ 5. No real business model

Ask one simple question:

“How does the money grow?”

If the answer is:

❌ “Don’t worry, we trade crypto”

❌ “Just bring people”

❌ “We have international partners”

But no real explanation, it’s fraud.

Real investments have structure:

✅ Stock

✅ Loans

✅ Real estate

✅ Savings

✅ Agriculture

✅ Lending

Not magic.

✅ 🔴 6. You only make money when you bring people

This is called a Ponzi scheme.

They pay old members with money from new members.

When new members stop coming, the system collapses everybody loses.

✅ WHAT TO DO BEFORE YOU INVEST

✅ Check the company name on CAC or SEC

✅ Google reviews & real complaints

✅ Check their social media (not just fine pictures — real comments!)

✅ Search “Is (company name) legit?”

✅ Ask for registration and business address

✅ Ask how withdrawals work

If they block you for asking questions , thank God and run.

✅ If You Have Already Been Scammed

Don’t be ashamed , report it.

Most scammers get away because victims keep quiet.

Here’s what to do:

✅ 1. Gather evidence

Receipts

Transfer slips

WhatsApp chats

Screenshots

Phone numbers

✅ 2. Report to your bank

Tell them you sent money to a fraud account.

Banks can sometimes freeze the scammer’s account.

✅ 3. Report to EFCC Cybercrime Unit

You can report online or at any EFCC office.

✅ 4. Report to the Nigerian Police Cybercrime Unit

✅ 5. Warn others , save someone else

You might not get all your money back,

But you can stop the scammer from hurting more people.

✅ FINAL TRUTH

Investment is not supposed to be emotional.

If the offer sounds too good to be true , it is a scam.

If you want to grow wealth:

✅ Save small

✅ Invest small

✅ Be patient

✅ Be consistent

Money grows quietly , not magically.
